Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centre
RWA have succeeded in gaining planning approval for a 20 bed detox and rehabilitation centre in Harlow, Essex. The site is located in one of the New Town’s ‘green wedges’ where development is strictly limited, but the sensitive, low-profile design approach won praise from the planning authorities.
The concept is one of a collection of pavilions in the woods, which are arranged to enclose a private and contemplative courtyard garden at the heart of the facility. Whilst most of the architecture reinforces this sheltered, focussed atmosphere, there are some therapy spaces which deliberately turn outwards to face the surroundings, echoing the later steps of the treatment when residents prepare to return to society.
