Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire

Private house in Hertfordshire. Reconfiguration of family home.

This locally listed C19 house, originally a pair of estate workers’ cottages in the Little Gaddesden Conservation Area had an array of beautiful rooms but a layout which did not suit family life.

RWA formed proposals for the re-orientation of the whole building. The kitchen area, extended in the 2000s, is opened up, as is the hallway which benefits from a new double-height space, flooded with daylight and views to the garden. A stables block at the end of the house is sensitively reimagined as a family gathering and games room.
